The PhidgetEncoder Highspeed 4 input can be used with a wide range of mechanical and optical encoders. The encoder should be of the quadrature output type, indicating that there are two quadrature output channels (usually labeled A and B) and an optional third output channel that signals when the index pin (a reference point for the zero position or a full revolution) is reached.

The Phidget Encoder Highspeed 4 input is capable of reading four encoders simultaneously. The encoders are not switched on until the complete initialization of the device has been completed. It is possible to activate some or all of the encoders depending on how many of the channels are used. This can also be used to reduce power consumption when certain encoders are not needed.

The Phidget Highspeed 4 input encoder also has the ability to measure the duration between a group of quadrature changes. The time is given in microseconds. This time can be used to calculate speed and acceleration.

There are both mechanical and optical encoders available, with optical encoders dominating at > 100 counts per second. Check the data sheet of the encoder you are planning to use to make sure it is compatible with the Phidget Encoder Highspeed 4 input. Almost every incremental quadrature encoder works, but it is important to check this before connecting it to the Phidget. Absolute encoders do not work with this device.

This special revision of the 1047 has improved circuit breakers to increase system stability when switching individual encoder inputs on and off. It also has updated firmware with a few minor bug fixes.
